Job Title: Chief Financial Officer
Type of Company: Software company selling on demand remote service solutions.
Education: BS Finance, University of Delaware JD Law Boston University LLM Taxation, Boston University
Previous Experience: Technical support representative System analyst General counsel Contract CFO
Job Tasks: I manage the financial operations of a software company. This includes the basic accounting function, and the legal function. I am responsible for managing the finances of the company as well, which includes raising money through venture capitalists, and managing relationships with banks and other lenders. My job also requires me to get involved in the basic operations of the overall business. In sales, I help to maintain good business practices and pricing consistency. In other areas, I help the managers of those organizations (services, support, marketing) manage their budgets and finances so that they contribute to the profitability of the company. As the CFO, I am also part of the overall executive management team which sets company strategy and direction.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The job is very interesting and it varies day-to-day. There is always something new and urgent coming up for the business, which keeps the job exciting. I also am learning a lot as I do not have experience in all the areas that I am required to manage.
The downside to the excitement, is that there are also not enough hours in the day to get all the work done and sometimes it is hard prioritizing what should be done first. As soon as on critical project is completed there are a few more just waiting to be done.
Job Tips:
1. A basic accounting background is important, and I'd recommend getting a CPA.
2. Overall business knowledge is also key, especially for someone like me that is not a traditional accountant, so don't underestimate the value of non financial experience, such as programming, sales, etc. to round out your experience.
3. The traditional path to this type of position is an accounting degree, working in public accounting and getting a CPA then joining a company as a controller before moving up to CFO.
