Career Story: Accountant And Owner Of An Accounting Firm

Accountant And Owner Of An Accounting Firm

Job Title: CPA

Type of Company: Accounting, tax preparation, and consulting services.

Education: MA, Taxation, Bentley College

Previous Experience: I worked for two different public accounting firms before starting my own business.

Job Tasks: I provide accounting services to individuals and small- to medium-sized businesses, preparing tax returns and doing more general accounting and consulting. I also offer bookkeeping services and consulting to businesses and do financial planning for individuals. I do audited, reviewed and compiled financial statements. I prepare corporate, S corporation partnership, trust, estate and individual tax returns.

I spend most of my time conferring with clients via email or over the phone and in meetings. You need to respond to your clients needs no matter what they are. You also need to stay current in the field, as new information comes out almost daily.

One of the best parts of my job is the variety of work I get to do. I have helped some clients pay bills and balance a check book and assisted others to buy and sell businesses. The variety is what makes the work interesting and the people make it satisfying.

Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best parts of the job are its inherent variety and the interaction with clients. I love helping people. Most people do not know how to properly handle their finances and can really use an objective person to assist them. Most of my clients appreciate my objective advice.

The worst parts are the long hours and the clients who don't pay. Supervising employees and doing annual personnel reviews are not my favorite things either.

Job Tips:
1. Make sure you study and become educated in what you do. Get some really good experience and background as soon as you can.

2. Learn how to deal with people in all kinds of situations.

3.Make good contacts in school and at your job. Never burn a bridge.

4. Learn how to handle stress so it does not bother you.

Additional Thoughts: To do what I do you must love it. You couldn't put in the long hours if you did not love it.
