Job Title: Corporate Accountant
Type of Company: My company is a food services company and is highly ranked in its industry currently. My company is a UK based company but has a corporate office in the US as well. We specialize in servicing schools, colleges, universities, entertainment sectors and healthcare in ensuring they have the highest quality food service available at the best price and taste.
Education: BS in Finance, Simmons College
Previous Experience: I attended high School and was a participant in the Urban Scholars Program and Another Course to College Program at UMass Boston while in high school and also a part of the Inroads program before enrolling in college in my senior year of high school. I attended a two year private college out of state at first and then finished up at Simmons College in the end. During my college years I interned at Liberty Mutual Life Insurance and Beth Israel real Hospital.
Job Tasks: My primary responsibility is to maintain the accuracy and the integrity of the corporate balance sheet accounts. Each month I review and report on the balance sheet accounts to ensure the correct balances are reflected. I reach out to many people and investigate on certain balances that may not seem correct and I give the employee a deadline to respond with an answer on when the balance should be cleared and a solution on where it can be moved to.
I also am responsible for reviewing a few cost centers that use expenses and also generate revenue each month. Sometimes incorrect expenses are posted to my cost centers and I have to investigate those expenses and remove them from my cost center to ensure the accuracy of the cost center each month.
The company also leases a corporate jet and I am responsible for reviewing and paying the invoices we receive in a timely manner after discussing with the treasury if the flights are valid and who should receive the actual expense for the flights taken during the month. There are also management fees associated with leasing the jet and these are standard each month until we renew the lease annually.
My responsibilities are pretty routine each month. Some duties occur on a quarterly basis such as creating a budget. I also review working capital which measures how much cash we have on hand if the company went out of business at any given point in time.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: Sometimes the same routine can seem boring so change is always welcome. When research is involved it brings you to another department which you may not know much about and then you learn something new about another department that could possibly be a career change for you within your company!
Job Tips: Try your best to take as many courses in business and accounting as possible and apply for as many internships as possible. The experience you gain from working in the setting of a business is the best experience, more than a classroom can ever provide.
Additional Thoughts: I chose Accounting because it was safe, but if I had to do it all over again I would have continued on to pursue a Medical degree, definitely more exciting. I was able to intern in a hospital and work as an Accountant at a hospital and I loved it!!
