Career Story: Accounting And Finance Manager For A Digital Production Company

Accounting And Finance Manager For A Digital Production Company

Job Title: Manager Of Accounting And Finance

Type of Company: I work for a company that is in digital production including banner ad design, flash design, and website creation and hosting.

Education: BA, Accounting, Mercyhurst College (Erie, PA) •• MA, Accountancy, Clemson University

Previous Experience: I worked as a senior accountant with Deloitte and Touche for the previous four years

Job Tasks: My primary responsibility is to make the daily accounting designs that affect the company both here in the US and in Costa Rica. Every month I have the task of preparing financial statements that report the financial health of our company and then I present the results to the executives and investors of the company. I monitor the daily cash inflows and outflows and help to see that all of our vendors are paid in a timely manner and accurately. I work with the billing department to make sure that all customers are billed correctly and then I monitor how promptly the customers are paying for the work that we performed. To perform all of these items I need to enter all financial information into a software system that is a general ledger. The general ledger is where all financial information is tracked. The ledger is modified by making journal entries. One of my responsibilities is to make journal entries so that our financial position is accurately reflected for events that have occurred but have not yet been billed on either end. This helps to make sure that all revenue and expenses are recorded in the proper month for reporting.

Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is that I am able to oversee all of the aspects of the accounting for the company. The worst part of the job is that there is not enough support or tools to determine the appropriate accounting and to get things done accurately in a timely manner.

Job Tips: I recommend studying for the CPA exam while in college and passing all parts of the exam prior to starting the profession. I also recommend starting in public accounting to gain a broad knowledge of accounting that will help when you move to private accounting.
