Job Title: Project Administrator
Type of Company: A power company.
Education: AS, Liberal Arts, Lasell College
Previous Experience: I was an administrative assistant to an engineering project team.
Job Tasks: I am a project administrator supporting engineers in the Power Group, who specialize in systems for buildings.
Another name for what we do is "Co-generation": the use of a heat engine or a power station to simultaneously generate both electricity and useful heat. Most of these co-generation projects are found in colleges, schools and universities.
From the beginning of the project to the end I facilitate communication by email, phone and website, between all members of the project group: the client, my co-workers and other project team players outside the office (the architects, other engineers).
Any work completed by any team member at any given time during the project, I am asked to immediately post to the project website for all team members to view and use, whether it's 300-plus drawings or a one page document.
I have to be able to know without asking what needs to be done first and foremost at any given time. I manage up to 20 people with their work, doing anything from making meeting arrangements, to checking on the work they’ve done to make sure it’s completed.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: At any given moment I am asked to STOP what I'm doing and do something else. I can get frustrated because I like to finish one task before going on to something else.
The best part of my job is finishing the task that's been thrust on you and going back to where you left off with the last task.
Job Tips: I would definitely take courses in project management, business management and communications.
Take drafting or design courses that will give you an idea of the process that goes into designing a building.
