Operations Assistant At A State Agency

Job Title: Operations Assistant

Previous Experience: I started at Enterprise Rent-A-Car where I learned how to run a business. I later changed my career from sales to law enforcement as a communications officer and reserve police officer. I am still that part-time, but full-time I work now for the state.

Job Tasks: I work for an agency that was developed by the state to provide state money to organizations or colleges and universities that have new ideas that will help improve our state. If they meet our requirements we work with them on their idea by providing state funding and bringing them together with others in the state who've been working on similar projects. The idea is to work together to create new businesses and generate jobs. I work in the operations part of this division of the agency. Once we begin a new project with someone I help distribute the funds to that project and make sure that everything is done properly in regards to the rules of the state. I keep track of the progress of the project as well.

I am also part-time dispatcher and reserve police officer and volunteer as a rape crisis counselor. I have a passion for helping others, so by day I work for the state and part-time I work in law enforcement. In those fields I am able to take part in helping the people in my community feel safe and, when they need help, I can be there as someone they can depend on.

Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is that I know I'm doing a good thing and helping others. I am close with the Governor and help to improve the state and communities in which I live.

Worst? At times, it can be difficult because there is a lot of information you have to make sure is correct so that it is never questioned by the state. Also law enforcement can be very challenging in many ways. But is always worth it in the end.

Job Tips: If you want to do law enforcement, start learning all you can. Go to college and study Criminal Justice. Take a part-time or full-time dispatching job at your local police station and ask about being a police cadet. Meet with a chief in your town and interview him/her on advice to start your career. Take the Civil Service exam.

In my full-time job: go to college for Public Administration and be current in politics.

Additional Thoughts: I learned late how important it is to start in the law enforcement field. You don't have to know exactly what you want to do when you get to college, but be sure to ask around and if there are some things you are interested in, then ask someone who is in that career and search online. Always talk to career counselors and guidance counselors to find what may best fit what you love to do and would be great at. Nobody is perfect and sometimes you may try a few things before you find what you really like to do.
