Job Title: Administrative Assistant
Type of Company: I work for a public school in a suburb of Hartford, CT.
Education: AS, CCMC
Previous Experience: I worked at a major insurance company as a healthcare consultant, providing reports on usage of certain areas of healthcare.
Job Tasks: I maintain special education records for a public school system. I prepare state reports concerning the school system I work for. I set up special education meetings and prepare appropriate paper work for that meeting. I also maintain files and special reports concerning special education. I am an assistant to the psychologist, speech therapist, occupational therapist, physical therapist and special education teachers within the school system. I prepare the budgets for all special education teachers and staff. I accumulate and distribute all supplies and orders for the special education staff. Timing of meetings and distribution of minutes of the meetings to parents is imperative. Certain restrictions apply for both scheduling and distributing minutes of the meetings. Confidentiality is a must.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is dealing with the people in my department. I enjoy the interaction with the different personalities. The work is interesting and educational and would be so informative to the general public.
The worst part of my job is the constant re-scheduling of meetings and appointments. It is a constant exercise in patience when trying to schedule meetings as parents can often be difficult.
Job Tips: The job I do requires me to pay close attention to details. The state reports are very detailed and must be completed properly and on time. My job is extremely detailed-oriented. State reports must be accurate and contain specific information. An excellent working knowledge of word processing and Excel are important to performing this job.
Additional Thoughts: One must be friendly and patient in this job. The services provided to the students are enormously varied but geared to helping them succeed. They cover many areas, including math, reading, speech articulation, social interaction and counseling.
