Job Title: Technician/Service Advisor Automotive Dealership
Type of Company: An automotive dealership.
Education: high school, many seminars and workshops relating to job
Previous Experience: I started working part-time for the parts department while in high school and when I graduated I took a full-time job in the service department. I've worked for two dealership "families" in 27 years.
Job Tasks: My primary responsibility is to gather information from customers about their cars or trucks and convey it properly to the technician so he can repair it. I write or type what is told to me by the customer so that the technician can understand what needs to be done. I try to give the customer an estimated time of completion and cost. If a repair might be under warranty, it is my responsibility to call the repair estimate in to the warranty company to find out about possible coverage. Since circumstances vary so much, it can be hard to predict what'll be covered and what won't. Sometimes the customer needs a loaner vehicle and I have to arrange for a rental or one of our service department loaners. I then fill out a form with the customer's information and insurance company and policy number. I need to find the best possible, available technician to take on the job. I need to follow up on the repairs with the technician and make sure our estimates of both time and money are reasonably accurate. I might need to update the customer by phone if something changes or the warranty doesn't apply. When the customer comes to pick up the vehicle, I need to review the problems and tell him how we addressed them.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is my happy and friendly customers. They are the people who appreciate you and what you've done. Getting a chance to help someone is always very rewarding!
The worst part of the job is the customer that is never happy no matter what you do for him. All you can do is try not to take it personally.
Job Tips: I would say that the best advice for someone wanting to pursue a career in automotive service would be to choose a vehicle maker you're proud to work for. Study and learn as much as you possibly can. If you are interested in vehicles, motors etc. you will definitely learn faster and retain it. Try it out. You could learn from a smaller repair shop to see where your general interests lie. If you choose a specific field such as transmission repair, or electrical repair, you will be able to better concentrate your studies.
