Job Title: Administrative Assist In Accounting
Type of Company: I work for a company which sells and services large commercial air compressors.
Education: BS, Business Education, Husson College (Bangor, ME)
Previous Experience: I taught accounting part-time at a high school and worked for a small manufacturing business doing accounts receivables. I was also the manager of a video store.
Job Tasks: I work in the accounting department of a business that sells and services commercial air compressors. I am in charge of recording all incoming deposits and out going payments in the company bank book. Once I receive the details of the checks coming in, I apply the amount to the customer's account.
Another part of my job involves setting up new customers in the computer system. In order to do this correctly I have to determine if the customer can buy on open account, or has to pay in advance. To set customers up with an open account I have to check their credit, which means getting them to furnish us a list of 3 or 4 companies they already do business with. I check with the other businesses to see how well they pay. If everything is fine, the customer goes on open account. If not, I ask for pre-payment. I also pay the company's bills when the bills are due. I make out checks twice a month.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of the job is using my skills in the accounting area. Working with numbers and solving problems are tasks I enjoy.
The worst part of my job is talking on the phone with customers.
Job Tips:
1. Take as many math and business classes as possible.
2. Be willing to accept responsibility, and work well with others.
3. Be on time to work no matter what career you choose.
Additional Thoughts: I do enjoy my job. I feel that my degree in Business Education has given me a variety of opportunities. I can teach at the high school level, I can work for a company in its accounting department At this point in my life, I do wish I could go back to teaching.
