Career Story: Bookkeeper For A Property Management Company

Bookkeeper For A Property Management Company

Job Title: Bookkeeper

Type of Company: My company manages apartment complexes.

Education: High School Diploma

Job Tasks: As a bookkeeper for a property management firm I deal with the accounting needs of our current and previous residents. I post rent checks and refer previous residents' requests for the return of their security deposits to our corporate office. Mainly, though, I deal with residents who are involved in eviction proceedings (for non-payment of rent). But I also work with past residents who've made arrangements to pay their back rent, keeping their records up-to-date.

I assist our collections department as well, ensuring that they dun the right people, and I will "walk" (or inspect) apartments that are about to be vacated to check them for damage. I deal with hundreds of people; as bookkeeping jobs go, mine is extremely customer-service-oriented.

Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is being able to help people by allowing them to have a comfortable living environment. The worst part of my job is having to evict people. But having no breaks from the 1st through the 5th of each month -- the time when rents are due -- comes a close second.

Job Tips: If you're thinking about pursuing a career as a bookkeeper for a property management company, take a turn as a customer service representative or a leasing consultant first. Taking courses in college won't hurt you, and you'll know more about accounting when you start, which will help you to move up the ladder. A lot of residential communities are looking for people with experience, though; degrees are of secondary importance.

One you've gotten a job, get to know your community and its residents; it'll help you when you finally have to deal with them financially.
