Job Title: Payroll Processor
Type of Company: My company provides low-income families with child care services.
Education: AA, Criminal Justice BA, Psychology
Previous Experience: I was an internal auditor for a supermarket chain.
Job Tasks: In my job as a payroll processor I am in charge of all employees' paychecks. I use ADP products to keep track of employees' timecards. Every other week I transfer all employees' timecards into another product which produces checks for them based on the hours they worked. I also keep track of vacations, sick days and personal time and handle wage garnishments. Garnishments are court-ordered deductions from an employee's paycheck to redeem an outstanding debt, very often a tax debt to the county or state.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of the job is that there is always something to do and the day goes by quickly. Another good part about the job is that I feel it strengthens my analytical skills. This job has also made me more aware of trends: which employees are always taking time off, for example. You notice habits and routines more.
The worst part is when employees are impatient with errors in paychecks resulting from manager error. Another part I don't like is how little room for growth there is at the fairly small agency I'm employed by.
Job Tips: I would recommend learning as much as you can about payroll taxes and garnishments. I would also suggest you learn everything you can about payroll software and build on that. Pursue a job within a larger company in the private sector. Avoid a municipal job or government agencies where salaries and employment are reliant on the amount of funding received.
