Job Title: Testing And Calibration Technician
Type of Company: I work for a privately owned plating company. We apply specialized coatings to metal products for a variety of manufacturers: aerospace to medical to firearms.
Education: AS, Telecommunications Technology, Springfield Technical Community College (Springfield, MA)
Previous Experience: I was considered for this position based on my National Guard experience in aircraft maintenance. I also had work experience in technical and mechanical fields, like fire extinguisher servicing and video production.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is getting to work with people in all our departments and moving around our shop. I don't get stuck dong the same thing, in the same place, day after day after day.
Probably the worst thing about my job is the amount of time it takes. I regularly work 50 or more hours, and there is always more to do.
1. Learn to work with other people and learn from them. Most people are willing to help if you ask good questions and pay attention to the answers.
2. Be organized. If you fall behind, it takes that much more effort to get caught up.
3. Be flexible. I start each day with a plan, but rarely do I actually get to follow it through the whole day.
Additional Thoughts: Honesty and a good work ethic are two of the most important qualities this job requires. I look at this job as a craft that I can always improve upon, and I would rather do what's right than what is popular.
