Job Title: Teacher
Type of Company: I teach in an urban school district in the North Carolina piedmont.
Education: BA, University of North Carolina-Greensboro North Carolina Environmental Education Certification
Previous Experience: I have been a third grade teacher for the past 23 years.
Job Tasks: I am a second and third grade teacher in an elementary school in Winston Salem, NC. We keep our students for two years. Our school is unique in that we are a very hands-on experiential school. Our class size is small (15) but we have no specialists (music, art, PE) Parents are required to volunteer one hour per week per child. With their help and the help of the downtown community, we are able to provide extensive enrichment opportunities for our students. Every student in every grade is in a performance each year. Parents and teachers are responsible for the staging, costumes, writing the play (or skit or musical), sound, etc. We use the downtown community to enhance our program. We swim at the Y, ice skate at the city rink, attend local art exhibits, walk to the public library.
Elementary teachers are responsible for all content areas: spelling, reading, writing, math, science and social studies. We plan and execute all lesson plans to fit a wide range of abilities. Higher level students have extraordinary opportunity to express their talents. With the low classroom setting, lower level students with individual needs are able to be supported by teachers, aids, parent volunteers and community volunteers.
Teachers are allowed to be creative in their teaching styles. Students from this school leave with a high level of confidence in their individual abilities and talents.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: As a teacher in this school, I am fortunate to be able to be treated as a professional.
Job Tips: Challenge yourself to take a few classes in the things your are least interested in. It will stretch you.
No educational experience is wasted. Embrace all areas of education, formal or informal. You will learn as much from other participants in your class as you will from the instructor.
Life experience counts as much as a degree in education.
