Job Title: Insurance Agent

Type of Company: I work for a small insurance agency that specializes in the Public Sector.

Education: BS, Elementary Education, Fitchburg State College

Previous Experience: I taught school for 13 years and left teaching to go into insurance.

Job Tasks: I enroll individuals in their insurance benefits that are offered through their place of employment. I also sell insurance to individuals to protect their mortgages in case of an early death or disability. I purchase leads of people who have recently purchased a home and then contact them as they have filled out a response card requesting an agent to dell them life insurance to protect the individual as well as their families. I then quite often receive referrals from the insured person and quite often end up insuring their family members and their friends.

My territory is all over the state of Massachusetts

Job Tips:
1.) A person must study for forty hours in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and take an exam for life insurance and for health insurance plus a state exam. A score of seventy or more must be obtained in order to pass and apply for your license.

2.) A person must then apply to the state and pay two hundred fifty dollars for his license which usually takes two months to receive.

3.) Contract with a reputable company that will support new agents and train them in both the products and sales techniques.

Additional Thoughts: The most important personal qualities for a successful career as an insurance agent are having a friendly positive attitude and personality. Most agents work on commission basis only so you must first want to help people, set goals and stay focused on the end results. Never go into an appointment looking disheveled, smoking, using bad language, chewing gum, etc. A professional appearance is most important.
