Job Title: Insurance Sales

Type of Company: We develop products for the work site and sell them through independent insurance agents.

Education: BS, Finance, Jacksonville University

Previous Experience: I've been at this for twenty-one years.

Job Tasks: I recruit and train independent insurance agents to sell our products and work with them to identify clients and assist with meetings and enrollments. I spend about three days a week on the road staying in hotels to work with agents throughout the country. I have to live with the cell phone 24/7 as we have clients who work in hospitals, nursing homes, and factories that operate around the clock. I am always available even when I am on "vacation". This is a job that also becomes your life. It is important that every client knows they are important. We have focused on the services of one particular area of insurance benefits. By keeping the blinders on, we are now considered experts in our area and are sought by people looking to get help.

Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is the personal contact with lots of people throughout the country. The worst is the nights in the hotel when I have a wife and three kids at home. People often think the road life is great as you stay in nice hotels, eat in some great restaurants. But it can get lonely when you are at dinner by yourself frequently. It is important to build activities that you enjoy to avoid the boredom. The biggest reason people fail is they are not disciplined. It is far too easy to stay out late, sleep in and not get any real work accomplished. You must be a self-starter.

Job Tips: Be open to new challenges and willing to push through with them. Then if you are in sales remember that if everyone said yes and bought, then everyone would be in sales. When someone does not buy, it is not personal, just not a customer... yet. These jobs require a self-starter who is very disciplined. It is very hard to manage people when they are out on the road, and therefore job quality is purely a function of sales and activity.
