Job Title: Sales Associate
Type of Company: A department store
Previous Experience: I was a manager of a retail chain store and needed flexibility with my schedule once I had kids.
Job Tasks: I re-stock clothing and make displays. I assist customers. I clean up the sales floor and make sure all items are back where they belong. I work at the register. I do mark-downs. I also open credit card accounts. I have the flexibility to work in other departments other than the one that I am assigned to, if need be. Sometimes customers need help in putting together outfits for a special occasion. Men come in asking for help in making purchases for the women in their lives.
During Christmas, the hours are long and busy so you need to be quick. Fitting rooms need a lot of attention for cleanliness and also for loss prevention. Sometimes the elderly women shopping just want to chat with you while they look around and that is all part of good customer service to get the repeat business back in the store. The company's success is due in part to friendly customer service. It is the main goal of a sales associate. You need to take pride in your work as well as make sure you take pride in greeting each customer and welcoming them to shop in the store.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is the feeling of accomplishment at the end of your shift knowing that you left your department looking good and that the goods are all back where they belong. I also like most of the management and other sales associates I work with.
The worst part can be when customers are rude or just don't care how they treat the items in your store.
Job Tips: First of all, you need to have patience. You need to present yourself well in appearance and friendliness because you set an example for the store. Also, you need to be a fast and efficient worker in order to keep up with your job responsibilities.
