Job Title: Sales Merchandiser
Type of Company: We merchandise items for military PX stores.
Education: BA, Government & Education, St. Mary's College
Previous Experience: I worked as a sales representative while my husband was stationed on Guam.
Job Tasks: I am responsible for ordering and displaying Waterford crystal and ensuring that our stock of it's replenished. I start by taking an inventory of the products we order, then arrange what we have on the shelves and make sure that the storeroom's well-stocked. After that I make a list of the items that need to be ordered. At different times of year I display new items and make sure that sale items are readily accessible and have a prominent place on the sales floor.
Best and Worst Parts of the Job: The best part of my job is seeing the new items and getting to know the regular customers. I also love that I don't have set hours. So long as I accomplish what I need to I can set my own schedule, and even show up part-time if I want.
The worst part of the job is that every time I go in I have to clean up the shelves and make sure things are arranged correctly.
1.) Always try and be flexible. There will be times when you've just set everything up and management decides that it wants them arranged differently.
2.) Always try to be pleasant with the store employees. They are usually a great source of help and information. If something is not working, be open with your supervisor.
3.) Stay on top of new trends in your field.
Additional Thoughts: This is a great job for someone who likes to work independently. You do not have set hours as long as you get the work done on schedule. This career can also be moved when you move: most stores have merchandisers and it is a great thing to take with you if you are moving. You may not be working for the same company, but the experience can help you find an opening with another company.
