Auto mechanics, also known as automotive technicians, have an analytical mind and enjoy working with their hands. They diagnose and repair any mechanical issues on any type of vehicle, including cars, light trucks, and vans.

In addition, some auto mechanics choose to specialize. They may opt to work on only a certain type of vehicle, such as large equipment, motorcycles, or import cars. Others choose to specialize in a particular type of repair. This might include transmission work, repairing and replacing brake systems, or servicing air conditioning and heating systems.

Delaware Automotive Mechanic Schools

In Delaware, qualified mechanics may find work in repair shops, auto dealerships, garages, and more. It's a small state, but there is one school you may consider if you choose to opt for a formal education in this state:

  • Delaware Technical Community College: Located in Dover, this school offers students two Automotive Technician programs, a two-year Associate of Applied Sciences degree and a certificate program for those looking to enter the field quickly, or who already enjoy a career as an auto mechanic but want certification for career growth reasons.

What to Expect from Delaware Auto Mechanic Programs

With the incredibly complex and advanced computer and electrical systems found in modern automobiles, today's mechanics need to make sure they have top-notch skills and training.

Students study the eight principles of ASE certification:

  • Engine repair
  • Electrical/electronic systems
  • Heating and air conditioning
  • Engine performance
  • Suspension and steering
  • Brakes
  • Manual drive train and axles
  • Automatic transmissions and transaxles

Some students choose to pursue an Associate of Applied Science degree, while others pursue general certification. Still others choose to obtain specialized certification, such as:

  • Steering and suspension
  • Engine performance
  • Electrical
  • Brakes

Mechanics specializing in a particular repair often work in a service shop geared toward performing that service.

Delaware Auto Mechanic Licensing

The state of Delaware does not require a license for auto mechanics.

However, many of the better auto shops hire only mechanics with Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. To increase your marketability as an automotive technician, ASE certification is highly recommended. ASE certification may also help boost your income potential.

Auto mechanics who service air conditioners may need an EPA 608 Technician Certification to work with refrigerants.
