Data Entry Keyers
Data entry keyers, also known as data entry operators and key entry operators, enter lists of items and numbers and various types of data into computers for storage and for research purposes. They also complete forms located on computer screens. They may also verify data.
Data entry keyers may edit current information, reformat existing data and proofread new entries for accuracy. They typically use data or number keypads to place information into computers. Some data entry keyers utilize character recognition systems including scanners and electronically transmitted files. Computer software is then used which recognizes the characters on the document. Data entry keyers then follow up and enter any data which the computer software was unable to recognize.
Some companies have two levels of data entry keyers. Employees in the first level deal with work that is standardized and they don't have to make judgements in order to choose or code the data. Employees at the higher level may choose and code the data they enter into the computer. They may also have to choose the appropriate procedure for dealing with every piece of information. They may need to review several documents in order to locate the information they need.
Sample job titles include data entry clerk, data entry operator, data entry machine operator and data capture specialist.

Employment Outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the employment of data entry and information processing workers will decline moderately from 2008 to 2018. In addition, the median annual earnings for data entry keyers in 2008 was $26,120.
Education, Certification, and Licensing
Most employers require candidates to have a high school diploma and have the ability to enter data accurately at a given speed. Many employers provide on-the-job training.
