Registered nurses, also called RNs, provide patient care by administering medications, monitoring the health of patients and providing assistance during recovery. They also educate patients and their family members on medical conditions and home care treatments. Registered nurses typically work in hospitals, but can also be found in physicians' offices, home healthcare services or social assistance agencies.

To become an RN, you can either get a bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN), an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a diploma from one of the many registered nursing schools in Utah. Registered nurses who earn a master's degree in nursing (MSN) are known as advanced practice nurses. These nurses can perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as well as prescribe medication. Registered nursing programs provide both classroom education as well as hands-on clinical experience. Registered nursing programs may include coursework in nursing studies, health law and ethics, epidemiology, anatomy and patient confidentiality (HIPAA). Registered nursing schools in Utah offer both online and traditional classroom education. After graduating from an approved nursing program, you'll need to pass a national licensing exam in order to obtain a nursing license. Depending on your state, other requirements may be necessary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the employment of registered nurses is expected to grow much faster than the average--22 percent, or 581,500 new jobs, between 2008 and 2018. With 2.6 million jobs in 2008, registered nurses constitute the largest health care occupation. There are 17,670 registered nurses in Utah. According to data from May 2009, RNs in Utah earned an hourly median wage of $27.92, or $58,070 annually. Registered nurses tend to be concentrated in Salt Lake City, the Provo area and Ogden area, where jobs opportunities are more common.
