  • Bevill State Community College: For those looking to get moving quickly on their career path as a surgical technologist, Bevill State Community College offers a short-term certificate program. This program includes 29 hours of coursework, and requires students to complete 120 clinical cases throughout their course of study.

  • Calhoun Community College: Calhoun Community College offers two pathways toward a career as a surgical technologist. Students might choose to undertake a four-semester certification program, comprised of 44 hours of coursework and clinical experience. Or, they could earn an Associate of Applied Science through five semesters (62 credit hours). Both pathways culminate in students being prepared to sit for the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical First Assistants exam.

  • Faulkner State Community College: At Faulkner State Community College, students can choose to earn either a certificate or a degree in surgical technology. The certification program lasts for two years, and the AAS program runs for three. The AAS degree is also in pre-surgical technology in addition to surgical technology.

  • Gadsen State Community College: Gadsen State Community College students will attend the school's surgical technologist program for either two or three semesters, depending on when they enrolled. The program begins with strictly classwork, and shifts toward clinical experience during the second and third semesters.

  • Huntsville Hospital: Huntsville's program is dedicated to students becoming highly effective in clinical settings. Though there is a classroom aspect to the program, the program focuses on the clinical aspect of surgical technology, requiring students to undertake 120 cases in a variety of areas, such as esophagoscopy and sinoscopy. In the past few years, Huntsville has boasted a 100% pass rate on the NBSTSA exam.

What to Expect from Alabama Surgical Technologist Programs

Expectations for surgical technology programs in Alabama vary depending on students goals and needs. However, prospective students should be prepared to gain a strong foundational background in higher education, a thorough understanding of the medical field as a whole, and intensive clinical experience throughout their course of study.

Upon completion of their chosen program, students will not only be prepared for entry-level positions in the surgical technology field, but will also be prepared to sit for national board certification exams. These schools often measure their effectiveness based on their students' ability to:
