During operations, surgical technicians will assist in a variety of ways, working under a surgeon's supervision. Duties may include preparing the operating room, preparing patients for their operation and transporting them to the operating room. Throughout the surgery, they may assist surgeons in a number of ways, including passing and adjusting equipment and operating the lights. Most of the workers in this field have some type of postsecondary degree or certification in surgical technology, and there are a few Nebraska schools that could provide that education for you.

Nebraska Surgical Technician Schools

A postsecondary certificate or associate degree is something that most surgical technicians need to enter into this career. There are a number of different accredited programs available at surgical tech schools in Nebraska that provide the relevant qualifications needed to become a surgical technologist. These include:

  • Northeast Community College: Established in 1973, Northeast Community College is located in Norfolk, Nebraska, and offers a number of two-year programs. This includes their Surgical Technology program, which combines clinical practice (in conjunction with the area's hospitals and Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk) with classroom study.

  • Nebraska Methodist College of Nursing and Allied Health: Specializing in a variety of health care professions, NMC is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Their Surgical Technology course is a 22-month program which results in an Associate of Science degree. Students are also prepared to take their Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam during the final semester of the course.

  • Southeast Community College Area: SCC offer over 50 program options, as well as certificate, diploma and degree options. One of the Associate of Science degrees is the Surgical Technology program which is a 15-month program and is located on their Lincoln campus and is also available online. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

These include the National Center for Competency Testing where you'll become a Tech in Surgery - Certified (NCCT) and The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting where you'll become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

Some jobs may also require a certificate in CPR or basic life support whilst the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, the National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants and the American Board of Surgical Assistants also provide surgical first assistants certificates.
