The job of a surgical technician or surgical technologist is to provide support for the surgeon in a variety of ways while maintaining the overall flow of the procedure. Surgical technologists are present in the operating room, both before and after anyone else. These individuals ensure rooms and equipment are sterilized and ready to be used, and maintain inventory throughout a surgical procedure. Without them, surgeons and the rest of a medical team would lose countless minutes while operating on patients.

What to Expect from Oklahoma Surgical Technologist Programs

Obviously, surgical tech schools in Oklahoma programs are quite intensive in a number of ways. For one, they require students to quickly gain a foundation of knowledge with regard to the medical field. Additionally, they must almost immediately put this knowledge into action in a real-world clinical setting. At the same time, they must also prepare for licensing either on the state or national level.

The programs offered at universities and community colleges can sometimes be used as a bridge to a baccalaureate degree or further education in the medical field, as well.

Oklahoma Surgical Technologist Certification

Graduates of surgical technology programs should look into sitting for the certification exam proctored by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Passing this exam allows professionals to operate in any state throughout the country without having to worry about statewide licensing laws. Those who choose to become board certified must update their certificate every four years. They can do so by retaking the national exam or applying for renewal.
