Countrywide was founded in 1969 as Countrywide Credit Industries. At that time, the subsidiary that would become Countrywide Home Loans was called Countrywide Funding Corporation. Since its inception, Countrywide's mortgage banking business has grown significantly to the point where they are now the number one mortgage banker in the United States (ranking is based on 2005 data as presented in January of 2006 by Inside Mortgage Finance).

In recognition of its expanding business, Countrywide changed its name to Countrywide Financial Corporation in 2002.
