Overview
As more people look to further their education, online degree programs provide another option to access higher education. The advantages of online education include courses with flexible scheduling and the ability to access degree programs that may not be available locally. This is particularly important for people who work during the day and cannot attend a traditional college. Online courses work very similar to campus-based courses; except that students access the classroom over the internet.
Most online colleges have an educational portal where students access lectures and download assignments and handouts. To promote student-teacher and student-student interactions, some courses require a minimum participation in online chat sessions. In online degree programs, lecture times often vary depending on the class. For some courses, lectures can be downloaded and students can study on their own time, whereas other courses may require students to attend lectures at specific times. Exam types also vary by class and teacher. Some teachers require students to complete tests online in a set time period, while others allow students to submit completed exams through the portal or email.
For students who are considering online education, online degree programs are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional campus-based programs. For more information about schools that offer online degrees, see our list of online colleges below. To speak with an admissions counselor, click the request information button. Be sure to have questions ready when speaking with an admissions counselor. This will ensure that you have all the information you need to make an informed decision. Some good questions include: how do students access their classes, what are the typical course schedules and lecture times and how much do students interact with teachers and classmates.
Accreditations and affiliations: when speaking with an admissions counselor be sure to ask about the types of accreditations and affiliations the school has completed.
