Pocahontas, Arkansas, in Randolph county, is 32 miles NW of Jonesboro, Arkansas (center to center) and 92 miles NW of Memphis, Tennessee. The city contains a population of approximately 6,518.

Pocahontas History

Pocahontas was incorporated on January 15, 1857. It is the county seat of Randolph County. The community was named after an Indian princess. Pocahontas joins the Ozark foothills with the alluvial delta bottom and started as a river port. The mound building Indians were the first inhabitants of the area. The next inhabitants were the Cherokee and Osage Indians. The French arrived in the city around 1760. Ransom S. Bettis is the first documented settler. Thomas S. Drew supposedly settled in the area around 1826, married the daughter of Bettis, and was responsible for founding Pocahontas.

Things To Do In Pocahontas

You can visit the many museums and historic state parks while in Pocahontas. One can also visit Walnut Ridge City Park, Lake Charles State Park, and Old Davidsonville State Park. There are also many churches in the area. Each year the city celebrates the festivals of Black River Rendezvous, Randolph County Fair, Ghosts of Davidsonville Hay Ride, Fall Festival, and Maynard Pioneer Days.

One can avail of air transportation from Millington Municipal Airport.

Pocahontas Higher Education

Black River Technical College and Blackwood Beauty School offer opportunities for higher education at Pocahontas. Other institutes that offer higher education are Arkansas State University-Main Campus, Harding University, University of Memphis, and Southwest Tennessee Community College-Union Campus.
