Introduction to Agoura Hills, California
Agoura Hills, California is 4 miles SE of Thousand Oaks, California (center to center) and 31 miles W of Los Angeles, California. It is in Los Angeles county. The city is part of the Los Angeles - Long Beach metro area. The population of Agoura Hills is 20,537.
Agoura Hills History
The original inhabitants of this area were the Chumash, a Native American tribe. Spanish explorers settled in this area during the 1500s. The area was known as “Picture City” for a short period because Paramount Studios had a ranch where they shot westerns. The name Agoura Hills was based upon the name of an early settler who came to the area in 1871. The city has experienced rapid development since the late 1960s, after the Ventura Freeway was built through it. It was incorporated as a city in 1982.
