Big Bear Lake History

The city of Big Bear Lake was originally inhabited by the Serrano Native Americans. The city is named because grizzly bears populated the area until the latter half of the 19th century. The area witnessed a huge development during the Southern California Gold Rush between 1861 and 1912. The city was officially incorporated on November 28, 1980.
