Danville, California, in Contra Costa county, is 6 miles SE of Walnut Creek, California (center to center) and 14 miles E of Oakland, California. The town is situated in the San Ramon Valley. The impressive Mount Diablo offers a picturesque background. It's regarded as an affluent community and includes exclusive country clubs and expensive homes. The downtown has a rustic charm and numerous small shops.
A large number of old homes have been preserved and protected. The downtown has strong restrictions regarding large developments. It's home to the headquarters of Advanta Energy Corp and includes numerous investment firms.
The Danville area was part of the notable Mexican Land Grant named Rancho San Ramon. Daniel Inman and his brother Andrew purchased a large acreage in 1854 with money they made during the gold rush. The town began as a farming community, primarily growing wheat then changed over to producing fruits and nuts in 1891 after the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The raising of cattle and sheep were significant factors for the economy. Danville was developed as a residential community beginning in 1947.
