Introduction to Laguna Beach, California

Laguna Beach, California, in Orange County, is 4 miles W of Laguna Niguel, California (center to center) and 14 miles S of Santa Ana, California. The city is included in the Orange County metropolitan area. 

Laguna Beach History

Local Indians were the first to call the rich coastal lands and freshwater canyon lakes of the Laguna Beach area their homeland. They called the place 'Lagonas,' meaning 'Lake.' By the late 1800s, visitors had started arriving through the canyons to camp at the Laguna Beach. Eugene Salter was the first American to settle in South Laguna in 1871. The place quickly became a popular tourist haunt and the famous painter, Norman St. Claire was a regular visitor to this place. By the 1960s, the Main Beach boardwalk had been transformed into an open public beach park. In this decade, Laguna Beach gained a lot of popularity as an art colony.

One can also visit the amusement parks that offer fun rides and are ideal for picnics with family and friends. Additionally, the city is also famous for its art festivals that include the Pageant of the Masters, the Festival of Arts, the Sawdust Art Festival and the Art-a-Fair.
