Rancho Santa Margarita History
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Spanish explorer Captain Gaspar de Portola landed here in 1769. The Spanish ruled the area till 1821, after which it was acquired by Mexico. The city of Rancho Santa Margarita was incorporated in January 2000.
