South El Monte History

The Shoshone Indians once used South El Monte as their campsite and watering hole. During the California Gold Rush, the area was first settled by the Thompson Party. In fact, the El Monte Township was founded by the Thompson family during the late 1860s. In the early 20th century, the city of South El Monte began to develop faster and was incorporated in 1958.
