Introduction to South Whittier, California
South Whittier is an unincorporated Californian community located in Los Angeles County, just south of the city of Whittier and about 13 miles southeast of Los Angeles. A suburb of Los Angeles and part of the Los Angeles-Long Beach metro area, South Whittier is surrounded by several major thoroughfares, including Interstates I-5, I-105, I-605, I-710, and California State Highway 60. Nearest communities are Whittier (to the north), East Whittier (to the east), La Mirada (to the south), and Santa Fe Springs (to the west).
The community owes its name to that of its northern neighbor. Early residents of the area who followed the Quaker religion and regularly held religious meetings decided to adopt the name of respected Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier for their community. A local college area college (Whittier College) was also named after the poet.
