Yucca Valley History
The Morongo Basin, about half of which is occupied by the city of Yucca Valley, was inhabited by Shosone-speaking Chemuevi and Serrano Indians. A smallpox epidemic decimated them in the 1880s. At that time, the area was being prospected by Mexicans, Americans and Chinese people. Chuck Warren leased grazing land and, after hand digging a well, he opened the region to ranching in the year 1881. After World War II, the area was connected by highways. These improvements attracted tourists and the movie industry to the area. The city of Yucca Valley was incorporated on November 27, 1991.
