Canon City History
Canon City was founded in 1859 and established as a commercial center for miners during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. The first commercial oil well west of Mississippi was completed in Canon City in 1862 by A. M. Cassaday. Gold was discovered at nearby Cripple Creek in 1891, leading to the construction of a number of ore smelters in Canon City.
