Carbondale History
The Town of Carbondale was named after Carbondale, Pennsylvania. The economy was formerly based on agriculture. The ranchers and farmers capitalized on open land around the town in order to supply food for the miners in nearby Aspen, which was then a flourishing center of silver mining activity. In the early twentieth century, the primary agricultural product of Carbondale was potatoes. In 1981, many miners were killed due to a methane gas explosion. By the year 1991, all the mines were closed down permanently.
