Introduction to Erie, Colorado
Located in Weld county, the city of Erie, Colorado, is 9 miles SE of Longmont, Colorado (center to center) and 21 miles N of Denver, Colorado. It has a population of 6,291 residents.
Erie History
Before the 1870s, when the northern coal fields had still not been developed, inhabitants of this area were mostly farmers and merchants. Erie was founded by Reverend Richard Van Valkenburg who was a civic leader. A plat was filed in 1871 after the Briggs Mine had been established. Erie was incorporated as a town in 1874, and became a city in 1885.

Erie covers a total area of 9.6 square miles. It offers many mountain views and scenic trails, with little rainfall throughout the year. Erie provides venues for many different types of recreational opportunities. The city has a number of tourist attractions such as the Butterfly Pavilion, the Celestial Seasonings tours, and the Fiske Planetarium. There are many parks including the Barr Lake State Park, the Barbour Ponds State Park, and the Eldorado Canyon State Park. Historical monuments such as the Fort Vasquez are also located nearby.
