Avon Park, Florida, in Highlands county, is 41 miles SE of Lakeland, Florida (center to center) and 63 miles E of Tampa, Florida. As of the year 2000 census, 8,542 people lived in Avon Park.
Avon Park is one of the oldest cities of Highlands County. The earliest settler was a Connecticut native named Oliver Martin Crosby. Crosby settled in this area in order to study the wildlife of Everglades. He was followed by many people, which led to the establishment of the town called "Lake Forest". Crosby later changed this name to Avon Park, when a woman who had also settled there convinced him that the area was similar to Stratford-upon-Avon.
The residents enjoy various water sports like fishing and boating, among others. They also play golf at the various golf courses in the area. You can also find them indulging in biking and hiking.
The city is served by the Avon Park Executive Airport, which lies at a distance of about 2 miles from the central business area.
The South Florida Community College serves the needs for higher education.
