Introduction to Coconut Creek, Florida
Coconut Creek, Florida, in Broward county, is 1 miles E of Margate, Florida (center to center) and 33 miles N of Miami, Florida. The picturesque well-planned city features a vast number of trees, beautiful parks, waterways and landscaped communities. The environment includes wooded areas and wetlands. It's known as the "Butterfly Capital of the World" and features one of the largest butterfly aviaries on the globe. Coconut Creek is recognized as an environmentally friendly community.
The city is named after the vast number of coconut trees planted by developers. Coconut Creek is included in the South Florida Metropolitan area. The City Commission's Main Street Design Standards document requires the development of the downtown area to create a mix use community and include a substantial amount of recreational open space. Compact development, green building techniques and alternative transportation options are required. The city was incorporated in 1967.
Coconut Creek History
In the early days, the region was primarily farmland and wilderness. A large number of migrant field workers were employed to grow crops. Tomatoes, strawberries, beans and peppers were some of the primary crops. In 1956 real estate developer R.E. Bateman purchased acreage that became a major part of Coconut Creek. The area was filled with trees, especially native pines. In 1967 Coconut Creek became a city.
Coconut Creek Attractions
Butterfly World is a prominent Florida tourist attraction and features a butterfly aviary which is regarded as one of the largest in the world. It's home to approximately 5000 live butterflies. It also includes a bug zoo and the Jewels of the Sky Aviary which features hummingbirds and other bird species. Visitors enjoy the venue's waterfalls and attractive gardens. Coconut Creek Activities
The residents enjoy outdoor activities at the city's large number of parks. The local community center is available for a variety of endeavors and sports. Residents often travel to the nearby coastline including the popular beaches at Fort Lauderdale.
The region features quality golf courses including Eagle Lakes Golf Course, Palm Aire Country Club, Pompano Beach Golf Course and the Deer Creek Golf Club. The popular Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve and Biscayne National Park are located in the region.
