Introduction to Gulfport, Florida
Gulfport, Florida, in Pinellas county, is 2 miles SW of St. Petersburg, Florida (center to center) and 20 miles SW of Tampa, Florida. The city is considered part of the Tampa - Saint Petersburg - Clearwater metropolitan area. Gulfport has a population of 12,527.
Gulfport History
Gulfport was called Disston City in 1884, after its earliest settler Hamilton Disston. The postal authorities changed the name to Bonafacio in 1890. This was followed by an attempt to develop the community by naming it Veteran City. It was done with the hope of attracting Civil War veterans to settle there. In 1905, it was connected to St. Petersburg through a trolley line. A pier was also extended into Boca Ciega Bay. These developments acted as a catalyst of progress as the city began to grow. It was incorporated in 1910 and named Gulfport.
