This was followed by an attempt to develop the community by naming it Veteran City. It was done with the hope of attracting Civil War veterans to settle there. In 1905, it was connected to St. Petersburg through a trolley line. A pier was also extended into Boca Ciega Bay. These developments acted as a catalyst of progress as the city began to grow. It was incorporated in 1910 and named Gulfport.
