Fairburn, Georgia, in Fulton county, is 16 miles SW of Atlanta, Georgia. The city, which is in the Atlanta area, has 5,464 residents.

Fairburn History

The area now known as Fairburn was first settled in 1830. In 1833, the community was founded and christened "Cartersville", which was later changed to "Berryville". In his records, historian Lucian Lamar Knight mentioned that the area was named "Fairburn" after a town in the County of York, England. The foundations of the Atlanta and LaGrange Railroad were laid in 1849, and a depot was built in Fairburn in 1852. Two years later, the State Legislature granted the charter for the town of Fairburn. In the 1870s, the area experienced significant growth in terms of the construction of groceries, stores, a hotel, a printing press, factories, saloons, cotton gins, marble yards, an oil mill, a private school, and several churches. In the late 1890s, Fairburn was known as a banking town. Electric lights were installed in 1906 and in 1925, Fairburn was reincorporated as a city.

Old Campbell County Museum, located in Fairburn, displays artifacts and memorabilia of historical importance. The city also offers easy access to numerous other museums such as the Braves Museum & Hall of Fame, Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, Georgia State Museum of Science and Industry, Museum of Design, and APEX Museum. Historical sites including the Tullie Smith Farm, Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, and Wren's Nest, are also close by. The 2,549-acre Sweetwater Creek State Park includes a lake and offers facilities for the enjoyment of hiking, fishing, boating, and picnicking. Other popular attractions are the Atlanta Botanical Garden, World of Coca-Cola, the Atlanta Farmers Market, and Zoo Atlanta.
