Fairburn History

The area now known as Fairburn was first settled in 1830. In 1833, the community was founded and christened "Cartersville," which was later changed to "Berryville." In his records, historian Lucian Lamar Knight mentioned that the area was named "Fairburn" after a town in the County of York, England. The foundations of the Atlanta and LaGrange Railroad were laid in 1849, and a depot was built in Fairburn in 1852. Two years later, the State Legislature granted the charter for the town of Fairburn. In the 1870s, the area experienced significant growth in terms of the construction of groceries, stores, a hotel, a printing press, factories, saloons, cotton gins, marble yards, an oil mill, a private school, and several churches. In the late 1890s, Fairburn was known as a banking town. Electric lights were installed in 1906 and in 1925, Fairburn was reincorporated as a city.
