Maili is located in the Honolulu County, which was discovered in 1804 by Kamehameha, an ancient king. This county became a consolidated city - county in 1907. The United States Conference of Mayors stated that Honolulu County was an example of modern American metropolitan area government. This was cited under the city charter that was adopted in 1959. Maili is a census - designated place. The town derived its name from a Hawaiian term meaning "pebbly". It refers to the rounded stones of the shore.
