Wailuku was the main tourist destination that Maui County had in the 20th century. Since then, Wailuku has been overshadowed with the many rising resort towns. The Kaahumanu Church was established in the town in 1876. It is the county seat of Maui County, which was founded in the year 1905.

One can visit the Bailey House Museum and the Maui Community Theater while in Wailuku. For all nature lovers, the best place to be in is the Hawai‘i Nature Center. The Ka‘ehu Beach is also a major tourist attraction. There are many parks that can be enjoyed including the Mokuhau Park, Kepaniwai Park, and Wells Park. Tourists also can be a part of the Maui County Fair that is hosted by Wailuku.
