Wailuku was the main tourist destination that Maui County had in the 20th century. Since then, Wailuku has been overshadowed with the many rising resort towns. The Kaahumanu Church was established in the town in 1876. It is the county seat of Maui County, which was founded in the year 1905.

Tourists also can be a part of the Maui County Fair that is hosted by Wailuku.
