Waimea, Hawaii

Introduction to Waimea, Hawaii

The population of Waimea is 7,028.

Waimea History

The word ‘waimea’ means reddish water. In the early days people here lived on subsistence agriculture. They used to make Kapa and thatch hales. When the Europeans arrived most of the sandalwood forests were harvested. The area then became appropriate for cattle grazing. In 1793, Captain George Vancouver gifted California Longhorn Cattle to King Kamehameha of Hawaii. In 1809 John Palmer Parker was employed by the king to tame the uncontrollable population of the cattle. In 1815, he married the daughter of a chief and developed the largest ranch of the area. This is known as the Parker Ranch. The official United States Postal Service name of the area is Kamuela.
