Overview
Online degree programs provide students with another option to access higher education. The advantages of online education include courses with flexible scheduling and the ability to access degree programs that may not be available locally. This is particularly important for working professionals who have obligations during the day and cannot attend a traditional college. For online colleges, students take classes over the internet.
Students typically access the classroom through an online portal where they attend classes and can download lectures, assignments and handouts. For some classes, participation in online chat session may be part of the course requirements. These chat sessions are used to promote student-teacher and student-student interactions. In online degree programs, lecture times often vary depending on the class. For some courses, lectures can be downloaded and students can study on their own time, whereas other courses may require students to attend lectures at specific times. To take exams, some courses allow students to submit tests through the portal (or email) by a specific time. In other courses, students are required to take tests online during a set time period.
As online degree programs increase in popularity, more and more choices become available for students who wish to take courses online. For more information about online education, see our list of colleges with online degree options below. To speak with an admissions counselor, click the request information button. Several good questions to ask an admissions counselor include the different program choices available, how do students access classes and coursework and how do students interact with teachers and fellow classmates.
Accreditations and affiliations: when speaking with an admissions counselor be sure to ask about the types of accreditations and affiliations the school has completed.
