Mount Vernon, Illinois, in Jefferson county, is 77 miles W of Evansville, Indiana and 77 miles E of St. Louis, Missouri. The city contains a population of approximately 16,269.

Mount Vernon History

Zadok Casey founded Mount Vernon in 1817. The name was based on George Washington’s plantation of the same name in Northern Virginia. The Illinois Supreme Court was shifted to Mount Vernon in 1848. This brought important lawyers, including Abraham Lincoln, to Mount Vernon to argue their cases. In February 1888, the area was hit by a tornado and suffered substantial destruction. It was one of the first disasters where the American Red Cross assisted in the relief efforts.

The city of Mount Vernon is very close to some of the most exciting outdoor recreation opportunities in Illinois. The Rend Lake Recreation area is a popular spot where people go for boating, fishing and hunting. There are a couple of golf courses in the city as well. Moreover, there are excellent offerings for people who are interested in art, history and culture. The Jefferson County Historical Village has authentic exhibits that speak volumes about the history of the area.
