Vernon Hills, Illinois, in Lake county, is 8 miles N of Palatine, Illinois and 30 miles NW of Chicago, Illinois. The village is in the Chicago area. There are 20,120 residents in Vernon Hills.

Vernon Hills History

Vernon Hills was founded in 1851 as a 200 acre farm. Development was sluggish until a part of the land was bought in 1950 for the development of a golf course and a residential community. The area was named Vernon Hills around the same time. It was incorporated as a village in 1958. In 1971, an additional plot of land was annexed to Vernon Hills, where a huge commercial hub named Hawthorn Center was built. This helped facilitate rapid development of the area.
