Schererville, Indiana, in Lake county, is 7 miles SE of Hammond, Indiana and 28 miles S of Chicago, Illinois. The town is included in the Gary metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 24,851 people lived in Schererville.
This area was known as Crossroad's long before Schererville was established, and even before Indiana became a state. The name described the region aptly as many Indian trails intersected here. These trails became the routes of early settlers. One of these early settlers was Nicholas Scherer, who came to the U.S. from Germany in 1846. He arrived in this area in 1866 and established Schererville.
