Emporia, Kansas, in Lyon county, is located 52 miles SW of Topeka, Kansas (center to center) and 7is 9 miles NE of Wichita, Kansas. As of the year 2000 census, 26,760 people resided in Emporia.

Emporia History

The city of Emporia was founded in the year 1857. The name of the city was derived from ancient Carthaginian Africa. In 1953, Emporia became a site of the first Veterans Day observation. The city is famous for the newspaper Emporia Gazette, which was first published by William Allen White in the early 20th century. The first Veterans Day of United States was observed in the city in 1953.
