Donaldsonville, Louisiana, in Ascension county, is 24 miles S of Baton Rouge, Louisiana (center to center) and 55 miles W of New Orleans, Louisiana. The city is in the Baton Rouge area. There are 7,605 residents in Donaldsonville.

Donaldsonville History

In 1758 the Acadians began to settle in this area. The territory was ruled by the Spanish during 1772. During this time the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church of Lafourche of the Chitimaches was constructed. The French regained their control over this region and it became a division of the Louisiana Purchase by the United States in 1803. The city has been named after William Donaldson, the landowner. Donaldson commissioned Barthélemy Lafon, architect and planner to plan the new city in 1806.
